5 Steps to Designing a FocusED Lesson That Works

Lesson planning does not have to be an overwhelming task. Using the FOCUS Framework, teachers can design lessons that are intentional, standards-aligned, and engaging. Here’s a simple 5-step approach to create high-impact lessons, that become effortless over time.

Start with the Objective – Clearly define what students should know or be able to do by the end of the lesson.

Plan ONE Engaging Activity – Choose an activity that actively involves students in learning the objective.

Align the Assessment – Select formative and summative assessments that measure what the objective requires.

Build in Feedback Opportunities – Plan checkpoints where students can self-assess or receive teacher guidance.

Reflect & Adjust – After the lesson, note what worked, what didn’t, and how to improve next time.

    Example:
A 5th-grade teacher wants students to add and subtract fractions with like denominators (objective). The teacher plans a hands-on activity with fraction tiles (engaging activity), includes a quick exit ticket to assess learning (assessment), monitors students as they work and guides student thinking (feedback), and adjusts the instructional approach based on student responses (reflection).

It seems simple, but you'd be surprised to know how many classrooms lack this basic structure. This is where the FOCUS Framework becomes helpful and necessary to intentionally strengthen instructional practices.
